Snorkels: what they actually do, and what still drowns your 4WD
A snorkel moves your engine's air intake from somewhere inside the guard to somewhere near the roofline. That's the whole function. Everything else people believe about snorkels is either a side effect or wishful thinking, and the gap between the two is where engines get destroyed.
This guide is mostly about what a snorkel doesn't do, because that's the part the product photos don't cover.
What it actually protects against
Hydrolock. Water is not compressible. If enough of it gets drawn into a cylinder, the piston comes up against a column of liquid that will not move, and something has to give — usually a bent conrod, sometimes a hole in the block. This is not a repair, it's an engine.
It takes remarkably little water to do it, and it doesn't need a deep crossing. A bow wave from the vehicle in front, or your own wave coming back at you when you lift off mid-crossing, is enough to reach a factory intake behind the guard liner.
Dust. The less dramatic benefit, and on Australian dirt roads the one that matters more often. Air at roof height carries substantially less dust than air at guard height, especially in convoy. That means longer filter life and less fine grit reaching the engine over years of touring.
Some people also report a raised intake sitting in cleaner, less heat-soaked air. Treat any performance claim attached to that with scepticism unless the manufacturer has published figures for your engine.
What still drowns your 4WD
A snorkel raises one opening. The vehicle has many.
- Diff and gearbox breathers. These are vents that let the housings breathe as they heat and cool. Drive a hot diff into cold water and it contracts, drawing water in through the breather. Water in a diff turns the oil into a grey emulsion that doesn't lubricate. Extending the breathers up high is cheap, unglamorous, and does more for a genuine water crossing than the snorkel does.
- The alternator. Sits low and front on most 4WDs, spins fast, and does not like being submerged.
- The clutch or torque converter housing. Water in a clutch means a slipping clutch.
- Electrics. Connectors, sensors and the ECU location vary enormously between vehicles. Some are mounted low.
- Interior water ingress. Door seals are not submarine hatches. Water through the carpet reaches wiring looms and control modules under the seats.
- The radiator fan. A viscous or engine-driven fan hitting water can flex forward into the radiator core. This is why people fit a fan disconnect or drop into low range and keep the revs down.
- The intercooler and intake plumbing downstream of the snorkel, which still has joints.
- Your air filter itself, if water gets in from a poorly sealed snorkel installation — which is a real risk, because a snorkel is a hole cut in your guard.
A snorkel is not a wading depth
Manufacturers publish a wading depth for the vehicle. That figure is the manufacturer's, it assumes the vehicle is standard, and it does not change because you fitted a snorkel. A snorkel raises the point at which the engine ingests water; it does nothing about any of the list above.
If you want a number to work with, use the vehicle manufacturer's stated wading depth, and treat anything beyond it as your own risk rather than something a product has bought you.
Two practical points that matter more than depth:
- Walk it first if you can't see the bottom. Depth is the least of it — a hole, a ledge or a soft bottom will stop you in the middle, and a stationary vehicle in moving water is a very different problem.
- Speed makes your own bow wave. Steady and slow in low range keeps a bow wave in front of you and a trough around the engine bay. Fast is how water ends up where it shouldn't be.
Fitment: the guard is the fitment, not the vehicle
A snorkel is one of the most series-specific things you can buy, because it bolts to a specific guard pressing and its entry point is cut to a specific hole.
- The guard shape changes at facelifts even when the model name doesn't. A snorkel listed for a HiLux may suit one generation of guard and none of the others.
- Left-hand and right-hand drive vehicles sometimes take different parts, and imported listings won't always say.
- Some vehicles need a different part for different engine variants, because the airbox inlet is in a different place.
- Fitting almost always requires cutting the guard. That is not reversible, and doing it to the wrong template is expensive.
This is exactly the case the fitment index exists for: "fits Toyota HiLux" is not a claim you can act on, and "fits Toyota HiLux N80 2015–2018" is.
Sealing matters more than the brand
A snorkel that leaks at the guard entry, or whose airbox connection isn't sealed, is worse than no snorkel — it puts an unfiltered path into your intake at exactly the height you were trying to avoid. When you fit one, or have one fitted:
- Seal the guard entry properly, per the instructions rather than by eye.
- Check the airbox is sealing on its lid clips afterwards.
- Check it again after the first few hundred kilometres of corrugations.
- If you're relying on it for a crossing, know that a snorkel head facing forward can scoop water in heavy rain at speed. Most are reversible or come with a ram head and a rain cap for that reason.
What to check before you buy
- The exact series and build year, not the model name.
- Whether the listing states which engine variants it suits.
- Whether it's sold as sealed for wading or as a dust-reduction raised intake — these are different products and some cheap ones are only the latter.
- Whether the kit includes the template, seals and hardware, or only the tube.
- What you're going to do about your diff and gearbox breathers, which is the part nobody sells you at the same time.
Where FITSPEC fits
Snorkel listings are indexed by the fitment the retailer publishes, attributed to them. Where a retailer states a series, the listing shows it and says who said it. Where they publish only a model name, the listing says that too — because on this particular product, the difference between those two is a guard you can't un-cut.
