FITSPEC

Privacy policy

FITSPEC collects very little about you. This page sets out what we do collect, why, who else can see it, and what you can do about it.

Who we are

FITSPEC (fitspec.com.au) is operated by a sole trader based in Victoria, Australia, ABN 49 452 393 782. In this policy, "we", "us" and "our" mean that business, and "you" means anyone using this site.

We handle personal information in line with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).

The short version

What we collect

Information you give us

The only way to give us personal information right now is to email us. If you email hello@fitspec.com.au, we'll have your email address and whatever you put in the message. We use it to answer you, and for nothing else.

Information collected automatically

Our hosting provider records standard server logs when you visit, as every web host does. Those logs typically include your IP address, the pages requested, the time of the request, your browser and device type, and the site you arrived from.

We use that only to keep the site running and to see which vehicles and categories people are looking for, so we know where the index has gaps. We don't use it to build a profile of you, and we don't try to work out who you are.

An IP address can be personal information under the Privacy Act. We treat it that way.

If we add analytics

FITSPEC currently runs no third-party analytics script. If we add one, we'll name the provider on this page and update the cookies section before it goes live.

What we don't collect

Cookies and tracking

Cookies we set

The site stores your selected vehicle in your browser so it's still there on the next page. That stays on your device, isn't sent to us, and doesn't identify you. Clearing your browser data removes it.

Affiliate tracking cookies

This is the one that matters, so read this bit.

When you click a link from FITSPEC through to a retailer, an affiliate network — usually Commission Factory — may set a cookie in your browser recording that the referral came from us. If you then buy something within the network's tracking window, the retailer pays us a commission.

Those cookies are set by the affiliate network and the retailer, not by us. They're governed by their privacy policies, not this one. We don't control them, and we can't see your cart or your order.

To understand what Commission Factory does with that data, read their privacy policy at commissionfactory.com. Other networks may be used from time to time; the same principle applies.

Controlling cookies

Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies, and most have a private browsing mode — look under settings or privacy. Blocking cookies won't break FITSPEC; you may just lose your saved vehicle selection. Blocking affiliate cookies means we don't get paid if you buy, which is your call to make.

Why we handle this information

Who we share it with

We do not sell personal information, and we don't share it for anyone else's marketing.

A small number of service providers handle information so the site can work:

We'll also disclose information where the law requires it — a court order, or a request we're legally obliged to comply with.

Information sent overseas

Some of those providers store or process data on servers outside Australia, including in the United States and the European Union. We choose established providers who are contractually required to protect the information they hold, but once information is held overseas it is subject to the laws of that country as well as Australian law.

How we keep it safe

The site is served over HTTPS. Access to our hosting and email accounts is limited to the operator and protected by strong passwords and multi-factor authentication where available.

We keep as little as possible, which is the strongest protection there is. Even so, no website or internet transmission is completely secure, and we can't guarantee absolute security.

How long we keep it

When we no longer need personal information, we delete it or de-identify it.

Getting access to your information, or correcting it

Under the Australian Privacy Principles you can ask what personal information we hold about you, ask for a copy, and ask us to correct it if it's wrong.

Email hello@fitspec.com.au and we'll respond within 30 days. There's no charge. We may need to ask a question or two to confirm who you are.

Be aware that in most cases we hold nothing that identifies you — if you've only browsed the site and never emailed us, there's realistically nothing to hand over. If we can't give you access for a reason permitted by the Privacy Act, we'll tell you why in writing.

Links to other websites

FITSPEC exists to send you to retailers. Once you click through you're on someone else's site, under their privacy policy and their terms. We're not responsible for how they handle your information. Read their policy if it matters to you.

Children

FITSPEC isn't aimed at children and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, email us and we'll delete it.

If you have a privacy complaint

Tell us first. Email hello@fitspec.com.au with "Privacy complaint" in the subject line and set out what happened. We'll acknowledge it within 7 days and give you a written response within 30 days.

If you're not happy with how we handle it, you can take it to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC):

Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle information, we'll update this page and change the date below. If we ever start collecting more than we do now — for example if we introduce installer and fitter enquiries, or add analytics — we'll update this policy before we start collecting, not after.
