Recovery gear: rated vs unrated, and why it matters

This is the one category where getting it wrong doesn't just cost you money. Vehicle recoveries have killed and seriously injured people in Australia, including bystanders standing well back and people sitting inside vehicles. The mechanism is always the same: stored energy released suddenly when something breaks, turning hardware into a projectile.

Almost all of those failures come down to two mistakes: attaching to something never designed to be pulled on, or using gear for a job it wasn't made for. Both are avoidable, and that's what this guide is for.

If you take one thing from it: the weakest point in a recovery is usually the attachment point on the vehicle, not the strap.

Recovery points versus tie-down points

Look under the front of most utes and you'll find a hook or a loop. Many are transport tie-down points, fitted so the vehicle can be strapped down on a ship or truck during delivery. They hold a stationary vehicle against a steady load.

They are not designed for the shock loads of a snatch recovery. They're often thin pressed steel bolted to sheet metal or a bumper support rather than to the chassis. Under a snatch load they can tear out, and when they do, the strap and whatever's attached to it travels back at the other vehicle at enormous speed.

A rated recovery point is engineered for the job: much heavier material, designed to be pulled at an angle as well as straight, and bolted through structure meant to take load, with the correct grade bolts torqued correctly.

How to tell them apart:

Two more things. Fitting rated recovery points is vehicle-specific, so confirm the retailer lists them for your series and build date, and follow the torque figures exactly. And a single rated point is not automatically rated for a two-point bridle — a bridle isn't simply twice as strong. Follow the manufacturer's guidance.

Never use a towball

Attaching a snatch strap to a towball has killed people in Australia. Towballs and their mounting hardware are designed for a downward load from a trailer, not a rearward shock load. When one lets go it becomes a heavy steel projectile travelling directly at the other vehicle's windscreen.

Don't do it, don't let anyone helping you do it, and don't accept "I've done it heaps". Use a rated recovery point.

Rated versus unrated, WLL versus MBS

"Rated" means the item has a stated, tested load rating and documentation behind it. Unrated hardware — the hardware store shackle, the chain from the farm shed, the hook someone welded on — has no known strength and no known failure behaviour.

You'll see two numbers, and they mean very different things:

Recovery gear is often marketed on breaking strength because it's the bigger number. Don't plan a recovery around an MBS figure and assume you have margin.

Gear also degrades. UV, abrasion, grit, mud and heat all take a toll. Inspect before use and retire anything with cuts, glazing, chemical damage or heavy abrasion. Gear stored in an open ute tub ages faster than you'd think.

Snatch straps and winch extensions are not interchangeable

This is the second big killer, and it comes down entirely to elasticity.

A snatch strap is deliberately elastic. It's typically designed to stretch on the order of a fifth of its length under load — check the manufacturer's figure for yours. That stretch is the point: the recovery vehicle drives away, the strap stretches and stores energy, and releases it to pull the bogged vehicle out more gently than a direct jerk would.

A winch extension strap is deliberately not elastic. It exists to extend a winch's reach to a distant anchor, and a winch pulls slowly and steadily. Low stretch keeps stored energy low.

The two ways people combine them wrongly:

The same principle applies to tow straps and tree trunk protectors — both are low-stretch, and neither is a snatch strap. A tree trunk protector is also wide for a reason: it spreads load so it doesn't ring-bark and kill the tree.

Match the strap to the job, and match the snatch strap to the vehicle. Manufacturers publish a recommended vehicle weight range. Too light a strap breaks. Too heavy is also wrong — it won't stretch enough at your weight, so it behaves like a non-stretch strap and shock-loads the recovery points.

Shackles

A rated bow shackle is the traditional connector. Buy rated, use the size the manufacturer specifies, and do the pin up fully then back it off about a quarter turn so it doesn't seize under load. Never substitute an unrated shackle, a bolt or a hitch pin.

A soft shackle is a loop of synthetic rope, usually a Dyneema-type fibre, with a knotted button closure. The advantages are real: very strong for their weight, quick to use, and if one fails it doesn't fly the way a steel shackle does — which alone makes them a genuine safety improvement.

They have weaknesses too. Synthetic rope hates abrasion, sharp edges and heat. Don't run one over a sharp recovery point edge or let it sit against a hot brake or exhaust, inspect for cuts and fraying every time, and buy rated ones with documentation.

Winching, briefly

Everyone stands well clear

Bystanders die in recoveries. Common published guidance is to keep everyone at least one and a half times the strap length away in every direction — and further is better. People inside vehicles are not automatically safe; failures have come through windscreens.

Before any recovery: agree who's in charge and a signal to stop, clear everyone back, check both attachment points, check the strap and shackles, lay the damper on, and only then start.

If you're not sure, don't. Airing down, digging, using recovery boards and waiting for a better-equipped vehicle have never killed anybody.
