Roof racks and platforms: dynamic vs static load ratings

You've found a platform rack rated to 300 kg and you're planning a rooftop tent, an awning and a couple of jerry cans. The rack's rating isn't your problem. Your vehicle's roof rating is, and it's usually a much smaller number.

This is the single most misunderstood thing in the category. A rack manufacturer publishes what their product can carry. Your vehicle manufacturer publishes what your roof can carry. The lower of the two governs, and on most 4WDs and wagons that's the roof by a wide margin. Find your vehicle's figure before you shop — it's normally in the owner's manual, sometimes on a label, and your dealer can confirm it.

Dynamic versus static, and why the gap is so large

Two different numbers, for two different situations.

Dynamic load rating applies when the vehicle is moving. It has to account for braking, cornering, and the vertical shock of hitting a pothole or corrugations at speed — forces that multiply the effective weight of whatever's up there well beyond what it weighs standing still. This is the number that governs your gear on the road, and it's the smaller of the two.

Static load rating applies when the vehicle is parked. No dynamic forces, so the roof structure can support considerably more. This is why a rooftop tent that would be far too heavy to drive around with can be perfectly reasonable to sleep in — the tent's own weight has to fit within the dynamic rating for driving, but you and your passenger sleeping in it are covered by the static rating.

Two things people get wrong here:

Ratings are for a correctly fitted rack

A vehicle's published roof rating generally assumes a properly fitted rack that spreads load across the designed mounting points. It isn't a licence to put that weight anywhere on the roof.

It also assumes the load is distributed. Concentrating a heavy point load in the middle of a roof panel is a different loading case from spreading it across two crossbars near the pillars. If you're mounting something heavy and compact, ask the rack manufacturer how it should be positioned.

Roof load costs you more than payload

Weight on the roof counts toward your GVM like any other load, so it comes out of the same payload budget as your canopy and drawers. But it costs you more than the same weight in the tub, for two reasons.

Centre of gravity. Roof weight sits about as high as it can. It makes the vehicle roll more in corners, feel less settled on corrugations and be less forgiving on side slopes. A modest, well-secured roof load is fine. A heavy one changes the character of the vehicle, and not for the better.

It's the worst place for heavy things. The general rule for packing a 4WD is heavy and low, light and high. Recovery gear, tools and water belong down low. The roof is for bulky, light things — swags, chairs, an awning, empty containers.

If you're at the point of asking whether the roof can take it, the better question is usually whether it needs to go up there at all.

Mounting types

Which of these applies to you is determined by your vehicle, not by preference.

Rain gutter mounting. Older and more utilitarian 4WDs have external rain gutters, and gutter-mount legs clamp to them. Simple, strong, and generally the easiest to position anywhere along the roof. If you've got real gutters, you have the widest choice of racks available.

Factory track or rail mounting. Many modern wagons have factory side rails, or a recessed track with fixed mounting points under a cover strip. Racks fit to those points. Clean and strong, but positions are fixed by where the manufacturer put them, so your rack length and overhang options are constrained.

Fixed point / bolt-on. No gutters and no rails, but the manufacturer has provided threaded mounting points, usually hidden under trim or plastic covers in the door aperture. Vehicle-specific fitting kits bolt to those points. This is common on modern utes and wagons, and it's why rack fitting kits are sold per vehicle rather than universally.

Clamp-on / door frame. Legs clamp to the door aperture on vehicles with no dedicated mounting provision. Usually the lowest rated of the options, and the most sensitive to being fitted and torqued correctly.

Tub, tray and canopy mounting is a separate question again — that's mounting to the load area, not the roof, and it's governed by whatever the tub, tray or canopy is rated for rather than by the vehicle's roof rating.

The practical point: fitting kits are vehicle-specific and often series-specific. A rack that suits one generation of a model frequently won't suit the next, because the mounting points moved. Check the retailer lists the fitting kit for your series and build date.

Platforms versus crossbars

Crossbars are lighter, cheaper, quieter and less wind resistant. Good for a couple of defined loads — a tent, a pair of boards, a ladder.

Platforms are a full tray, usually with a perimeter rail and a slotted deck. Far more versatile for mounting awnings, recovery boards, shovels and lights. They're heavier and generate more wind noise and drag, which is worth factoring into fuel consumption on a long trip.

Half platforms are a reasonable middle ground: deck over the rear half where the gear goes, nothing over the windscreen where the noise comes from.
