Rock sliders vs side steps: what actually takes the vehicle's weight
These get sold side by side and photographed from the same angle, and they are not the same product. One is a step. The other is structure. Buying the first while believing you bought the second is how people end up with a crushed sill and a bar hanging off the vehicle.
The difference is where it bolts
A side step is a convenience item. It hangs off the body — usually off the sill pinch weld or a few captive nuts in the floor pan — and it's engineered to hold a person stepping up. That's it. The sill it bolts to is thin folded sheet, because it was never designed to carry a load in that direction.
A rock slider is designed to take the entire weight of the vehicle resting on a rock or a ledge, and to slide off it rather than dig in. To do that it has to be tied into the chassis rails, not the body, because the body cannot carry that load and neither can the sill.
That single distinction — body-mounted or chassis-mounted — is the one thing worth establishing before anything else. If a product doesn't state it, ask. A slider that bolts only to the sill is a step with slider styling.
Note that this is straightforward on a body-on-frame 4WD, which is most of the vehicles in this market. On a monocoque vehicle there are no separate chassis rails to tie into, and what's available is a different engineering problem with different compromises.
What "rated" means, and what it doesn't
You'll see sliders advertised as rated to some number of kilograms, or as jacking-rated. Two things worth knowing:
- The rating is the manufacturer's claim, made under their own test conditions. It's meaningful — it means someone did the sums — but it is theirs, not an independent certification, and it depends on the slider being installed the way they specify.
- Jacking-rated is a separate claim to load-rated. Being able to hold the vehicle's weight distributed along its length is not the same as taking a high-lift jack at one point. If you intend to jack off it, the listing needs to say so specifically.
Where a retailer publishes a rating, this site shows it as their statement. Where they don't, that absence is worth as much attention as the number would have been.
Kick-out, tube and plate
- Kick-out sliders angle outward at the rear, so the slider catches an obstacle before the rear guard does. Useful on tight tracks. They also make the vehicle wider, which matters in car parks and on some ferries.
- Tube construction is lighter and slides off rock well. Less useful as a step.
- Plate or tread-plate top gives you a usable step surface. Heavier, and a flat top will catch on rock rather than slide.
Most people want one product to do both jobs. That's fine, but it's a compromise in both directions, and the compromise is worth making deliberately rather than by accident.
Weight, and where it goes
Steel sliders are heavy — often 40–60 kg for a pair on a dual cab, before mounts. That's payload, and it sits low and central, which is the best place for weight to sit but still counts against your GVM.

Aluminium sliders exist and are lighter. They're also softer, and they mark and deform where steel would scuff. Whether that's a problem depends entirely on what you're doing with the vehicle.
Fitment: cab configuration is the whole question
Sliders are among the most configuration-specific things on the vehicle, because their length is set by the door aperture.
- Dual cab, extra cab and single cab take different sliders. Same model name, same year, different part. A listing that says only "Toyota HiLux" has not told you which.
- Some vehicles changed sill and chassis mounting points at a facelift without changing the model name.
- Tray-back and tub-back versions of the same ute can differ at the rear mount.
- Sliders often interact with the side steps you're removing, and occasionally with a canopy's mounting.
This is the category where the fitment index earns its place. "Fits Ranger" spans two generations, three cab configurations and a wheelbase change.
What to check before you buy
- Chassis-mounted or body-mounted. If the listing won't say, treat it as body-mounted.
- The cab configuration, stated explicitly, not inferred from the model name.
- Whether it's jacking-rated, separately from being load-rated.
- Weight per pair, so you can put it in the payload sum.
- Whether it replaces or works around your existing steps, and what that leaves behind.
- Whether fitting requires drilling the chassis. Some do. That's not automatically wrong, but it's your decision to make in advance rather than in a workshop.
Where FITSPEC fits
Slider listings are indexed on the fitment the retailer publishes, attributed to them. Where a retailer states a cab configuration, that shows on the listing with their name on it. Where they publish only a model, the listing says so — which on a product whose length is set by the number of doors is the difference between a part that bolts on and a part that goes back in the box.
