Canopies and trays: why payload is the number that catches people

Most people choose a canopy on looks, storage layout and price, then discover the number that actually governs the decision much later — usually at a weighbridge, or after a suspension shop tells them why the back of the ute is sitting on the bump stops.

That number is payload. It's the difference between what your ute legally weighs loaded (its GVM) and what it weighs empty. Everything you add comes out of it: the canopy, the tray if you fit one, the bar, the winch, the drawers, the fridge, the water, the second battery, the passengers, the dog, and the download weight of anything you're towing. Utes are sold on the idea that they carry a tonne. Once you've built one for touring, the honest figure is often a fraction of that.

So the first question isn't aluminium or fibreglass. It's how much weight you've got to spend.

Work out your payload before you shop

Do this before you look at a single product.

  1. Find your GVM — it's on the vehicle's identification plate and in the owner's manual.
  2. Find what your vehicle actually weighs *now*, with the accessories already on it, a full tank of fuel, and ideally you in the driver's seat. Don't use the brochure kerb weight. Take it to a public weighbridge — it's cheap and it's the only honest number.
  3. Subtract. What's left is what you have to spend on a canopy, its contents, your passengers and your towball download.

Tub or tray: it's a different fitment question

These are two different products and two different conversations with a retailer.

Tub canopies sit on or over the factory tub. They're generally lighter and cheaper, keep the vehicle looking close to standard, and don't change what the vehicle weighs by much. They're constrained by the tub's shape and by what the tub can carry — a tub is a pressed panel, not a chassis-mounted structure, so heavy roof loads on a tub canopy need care.

Tub canopy fitment is tight. Tub dimensions and rail profiles vary by series, by cab configuration and sometimes with factory tub liners or sports bars. This is a place where "suits Ranger" is genuinely useless — you need the series, the cab configuration and confirmation that it clears whatever's already on the tub.

Trays replace the tub entirely and mount to the chassis. That gives you a flat, square, chassis-mounted platform, more usable width, and a structure designed to carry weight, including a canopy with gear on the roof. It's the durable answer for a serious touring or work build.

The catch is weight and paperwork. A steel tray plus a steel canopy can consume a large share of your payload before you load anything into it. Removing the tub gives some back, but rarely as much as people hope. Because you've changed what the vehicle weighs, you should re-weigh it afterwards, and depending on your state and what you've done, there may be modification or registration implications worth checking with your state road authority.

Tray fitment is a different problem from tub fitment: it's about chassis rail dimensions, cab-chassis versus pick-up, wheelbase and cab configuration. A canopy sold for a tray is usually specified by tray dimensions rather than by vehicle, so you need both sets of numbers.

Aluminium, fibreglass, steel

There's no best material — there's a best fit for what you're doing.

Aluminium is the default for touring canopies. Good strength for its weight, doesn't rust, and easy to fit out with drawers, slides, water tanks and 12V. Usually the lightest of the practical options once you're talking about a canopy you'll actually load up. It dents rather than springs back, and a well-built one costs real money — the cheap ones are cheap because of thinner sheet, lighter framing and worse sealing.

Fibreglass is common as a tub canopy, often colour-matched, and generally the quietest and best-sealed option for keeping dust and water out. Lighter than steel. Repairable, though a good repair is a specialist job. It's less suited to heavy roof loads and hard bush work, and it doesn't take mounting hardware as happily as metal.

Steel is the heaviest by a distance, and the toughest. It's the choice for genuinely abusive work use where you'll weld a bracket on whenever you need one. For a touring build the weight is usually the wrong trade — a steel canopy and steel tray combination can consume most of what a dual cab ute has to give.

Whichever you pick, ask for the actual weight of the exact configuration you're quoting, including doors, racks and any fit-out. Base weights in a brochure rarely include the bits you want.
