Awnings: 180 vs 270, wind, and what it costs your roof rating
An awning is the accessory people regret least and think about least. It's also permanent weight, mounted at the highest and worst point on the vehicle, for a benefit you use at camp rather than while driving. Worth thinking about properly.
The styles, and what each is really for
- Straight (roll-out) awnings extend out from one side, usually 2–2.5 m. Lightest, cheapest, quickest, and the only one most people need. Typically 12–18 kg.
- 180° awnings wrap around the back or the side and rear. More covered area, more poles, more weight — often 22–30 kg.
- 270° awnings sweep around from a single mounting point to cover side and rear in one arc. The most usable shade by a wide margin, and the heaviest, commonly 25–40 kg with the mounting hardware.
- Freestanding variants of the above have legs that carry the load themselves, so the vehicle isn't holding the awning up. Heavier again, and much better in wind.
Freestanding versus vehicle-supported is the distinction that matters most in practice, and it's often buried in the listing. A non-freestanding 270 hanging off your rack in a gust is putting all of that leverage into the rack's mounting feet.
Wind is the failure mode, not rain
Awnings almost never fail because of water. They fail because of wind, and they usually take something with them — the rack, the mounting rail, occasionally the gutter or the roof skin.
What actually helps:
- Peg it and guy it every time, even for an hour, even in still air. Weather is the thing that arrives while you're away from camp.
- Drop the leading edge slightly so wind spills over rather than lifting under.
- Take it down before you sleep if the forecast is uncertain. An awning is a sail with a lever arm.
- Freestanding legs carry vertical load themselves, which removes most of the peeling force from the rack.
Manufacturers rarely publish a wind rating, and where one exists it assumes correct pegging. Treat its absence as normal rather than as a red flag, and treat its presence as a claim by the manufacturer.
It all lands on your roof rating
This is the part people miss. An awning is roof load, and roof load is the rating that gets exceeded most quietly because nothing about it feels heavy.
Your vehicle has a dynamic roof load rating — the weight it can carry while moving — usually somewhere around 75–100 kg on a 4WD wagon, and it is set by the vehicle manufacturer. It includes the rack, the awning, and everything else up there. A platform rack at 35 kg plus a 270 awning at 30 kg is most of a 75 kg rating before you've put anything on it.

Two things that catch people:
- The rack's rated capacity and the vehicle's roof rating are different numbers, and the lower one wins. A rack rated to 300 kg on a vehicle rated to 80 kg gives you 80 kg.
- Static rating (parked) is usually much higher than dynamic. A rooftop tent's sleeping load is a static question; the awning is a dynamic one, because you drive with it.

Mounting: the rack is the fitment
Awnings mount to a rack, a set of crossbars, or a dedicated side rail — very rarely to the vehicle directly. So the fitment question is usually which rack, not which vehicle.
- Most awnings ship with universal brackets sized for common rack extrusions, and the listing should say which.
- 270 awnings often need a specific mounting kit for a specific rack, because the load path through that single pivot is significant.
- Mounting to gutters or factory rails rather than a full rack limits what the vehicle can carry, and factory rails are frequently rated well below an aftermarket platform.
- On a ute with a canopy, the awning usually mounts to the canopy's rails, and the canopy manufacturer's rating applies rather than the vehicle's roof rating.
What to check before you buy
- The weight, including brackets, in your roof load sum — not the awning alone.
- Freestanding or vehicle-supported, stated explicitly.
- Which rack extrusion or rail the brackets suit, and whether the kit is included.
- Your vehicle's dynamic roof rating, from the owner's manual or the manufacturer, not the rack's.
- Fabric weight and whether it's ripstop, and whether the listing states a UV rating.
- Which side it mounts on. Awnings are handed, and the wrong side is a return.
